Concern Over Low TIMSS Scores

Q.11: The Third International Math and Science Study referred to as TIMSS tested students from 21 countries, including the U.S. Compared to students in other participating countries, U.S. 12th graders performed much below the international average on these tests, and were among the lowest scoring. To what extent, if any, are you concerned that these low test scores may negatively impact:
  • The nation's future security
  • The nation's future economic prosperity

A majority surveyed say they are either very concerned (50%) or somewhat concerned (37%) that the low test scores of U.S. 12th graders in math and science could potentially have a negative impact on the nation's future security. One in eight (12%) do not think this will have an impact on the nation's future security.

A majority also share concerns that these low test scores could have a negative impact on the nation's future economic prosperity. Nine percent do not think this will have an impact on the nation's future economic prosperity.
