Preparation in Math and Science
Question 15
Much of America's homeland security involves sophisticated, high-technology. Do you think that your generation has the preparation it will need in math and science to succeed in these industries?
Question 16
Looking back, do you wish you had a stronger preparation in math and science before you entered college?
Question 17
Do you feel the next generation will need a stronger pre-college math and science education than you received?
A large majority (83%) of college students feel their generation has the preparation it will need in math and science to succeed in industries that will involve sophisticated, high-technology. Sixteen percent do not.
Asked if they wished they had a stronger preparation in math and science before they entered college, two in every five (40%) students said "yes" and three in five (60%) said "no." More than half (52%) of students from less competitive colleges felt they could have used a better preparation in math and science. This compares to one-third (33%) of the students enrolled in highly competitive colleges.
While a majority of today's students feel their generation has the preparation it needs to succeed, seven in ten (72%) believe the next generation will need a stronger pre-college math and science education than they, themselves, received.
