New Martinsville, West Virginia
The Bayer USA Foundation and the New Martinsville site have donated funds to West Virginia to aid in the development of the WV- Handle on Science Project - a science education reform program that implements the National Science Resources Center curriculum into elementary school classrooms.
The Bayer USA Foundation also donated a $15,000 grant to the Challenger Center in Wheeling, WV, to give hearing and sight impaired children access to hands-on science learning.
In New Martinsville, four initiatives address education issues:
- Partners In Education (PIE) sponsors activities at four local schools, such as a "Scientist in the Classroom" program; school hall demonstrations during National Chemistry Week; tours of the Bayer research labs; and a "shadowing" program where students follow a Bayer employee for the day.
- The Community Advisory Panel (CAP) sponsors a Science and Industry Day where students present science projects and Bayer scientists discuss career opportunities in science and engineering. In addition, CAP provides "mini grants" to local teachers who design innovative science learning experiences.
- The Science and Mathematics Education Enhancement Council Inc. (SciMEEC) offers "Family Science Saturdays" in Moundsville, WV.
River Watchers partners Bayer employees with local students to collect water samples and conduct tests on oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH levels in area rivers.
