Bayer's science education efforts in Kansas City began in 1974 and were formally organized under the Making Science Make Sense program in 1994.

Today, more than 130 employees within two area Bayer businesses -- Bayer CropScience and Bayer HealthCare's Animal Health Division -- work together to provide hands-on, inquiry-based science to local students in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.

In Kansas City, MSMS:

• Created the Kansas City Science Initiative in 2004, supporting hands-on, inquiry-based science education reform within the Kansas City, Mo., School District. 
  
  
• Designs and presents science education training programs to help teachers implement science-based learning in their classrooms, including the "Teachers, Industry and Environment" workshop each year.
  
  
• Provides science fair judges and Career Day speakers and mentors.  The site also hosts job shadowing for local high school and college students pursuing various scientific disciplines.
  
  
• Organizes hands-on science activities at major community events such as the Jewish Arts Festival and Earth Day, as well as school science nights.
  
  
• Initiates partnerships with neighboring schools to provide year-round science activities.
  
  
• Participates in Bayer's own Kid's Day on the Farm program by providing hands-on science experiments for children at Bayer's research facility in Stilwell, Kan.
  
  
• Recognizes two outstanding high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in chemistry or a related science with the "Bayer MSMS High School Student Awards" each year.
  
  
• Participates in the Bayer MSMS Scholar Search.
