Responsible Care Initiative

At Bayer, our environmental policy means more than simply responding to environmental legislation. Our mission to change the world with great care means that we strive to identify and pursue voluntary opportunities to improve our environmental policies and practices. Our mission is to be the best, most responsible and safest company in the world. American Chemical Council's (ACC) Responsible Care program plays an important role in our goals and accomplishments.

Responsible Care outlines seven codes of good management practices for chemical manufacturers. Bayer has integrated these codes into its day-to-day business operations in part through the Bayer Structured Safety and Health Process (SSHP).
  • Community Awareness and Emergency Response
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Process Safety
  • Distribution
  • Employee Health and Safety
  • Product Stewardship
  • Security

With the SSHP, Bayer instituted specific guidelines in achieving "100 percent practice in place" implementation of Responsible Care goals at the 22 Bayer sites involved in the initiative. These guidelines fall into four areas:

  • Open Dialogue
Bayer believes that the concerns of employees and the public are of paramount concern to the development of corporate objectives. We are dedicated to providing timely information about issues and developments at Bayer to our employees and the citizens of the communities in which our plants are located. To facilitate this information exchange, we establish Community Advisory Panels to encourage open discussions between Bayer plant personnel and the public and that includes activities such as plant-safety updates, plant tours and special events like Household Hazardous Waste Cleanup Day.
Why I feel safe about Bayer is first of all their record. Their safety record stands on its own, so, I just really feel confident that they are being very open and honest with us and that we are learning everything we can about their company, the chemicals used at the plant, and the effect of those chemicals."

  • Environmental Protection
Bayer is dedicated to achieving the full integration of environmental protection objectives into its plant operations. Our plants must employ production processes that:
    • Continue to be improved and developed
    • Minimize emissions, waste and the use of raw materials and energy
    • Ensure that waste products are reusable or able to be disposed of in an environmentally compatible manner

  • Occupational Safety
The safety of our employees is Bayer's number one priority. Possible exposure to chemicals and all other potential sources of accidents must be systematically monitored and appropriate measures taken to prevent mishaps. We believe every employee must contribute to the safety of the work environment by strictly adhering to safety regulations and instructions. Bayer provides occupational safety training and monthly safety enhancement informational meetings.

  • Product Stewardship
Bayer is changing the world with great care by actively developing and marketing environmentally friendly products. But that's just the first step. We also work closely with distributors and customers to ensure that our products are transported, stored, handled, used and disposed of properly.
