Bayer Earns Recognition for Environmentally Sustainable Site Management
Bayer received Building and Operating Management magazine’s FMXcellence award

PITTSBURGH, March 17, 2010 – Bayer Corporation was honored yesterday for its commitment to environmental management at its 300-acre Pittsburgh headquarters campus.

Bayer received Building and Operating Management magazine’s FMXcellence award. It honors site management teams who achieve environmental sustainability goals. Only 10 U.S. sites received the recognition.

Bayer cut site electricity needs by switching to daytime office cleaning, energy-saving light fixtures and vending machines equipped with energy-saving, motion-activated lights.

It installed “cool roof” technology on campus buildings. The technology can cut energy use by as much as 10 percent on hot days. The company uses roof rock from modified buildings for site landscaping. Bayer is one of the first Pennsylvania companies to donate discarded office carpeting to a professional recycling company. To save paper, site office printers default to double-sided printing. The company also hosts student environmental programs on its campus.

Bayer received the accolade at the National Facilities Management and Technology Conference in Baltimore, Md.

“The FMXcellence recognition reflects Bayer’s worldwide commitment to sustainability in all its forms,” said Bayer Sustainability Coordinator Valerie Patrick. “It makes good business sense to meet our long-term environmental and social responsibilities in addition to our financial responsibilities, because you can't sustain one without the others.”

“Management support, employee engagement and education programs all contribute to the success of our Pittsburgh site,” added Tom Dingo, Bayer Site Operations Director.
