Importance of Science Literacy to Average Americans In Understanding and Dealing With Terrorist Threats

Question 21

Terrorist threats, including bio-terrorism, nuclear weapons and cyber terrorism can involve science, math, and high technology. In order for average Americans to understand and deal with these threats, how important do you think it is for them to have the general knowledge of science, math and technology that is sometimes called science literacy - very important, somewhat important, not very important, or not important at all?

The vast majority (93%) of college students believe that it is important for average Americans to be science literate so that they can understand and deal with terrorist threats of a high tech nature. Fifty-eight percent think this is very important and 35% say it is somewhat important. Few college students do not think science literacy is important.
