Gary S. Balkema

Bayer HealthCare LLC
President, Worldwide Bayer Consumer Care Division, and Member, Executive Committee of Bayer HealthCare AG

Since July 1, 2002, Mr. Balkema has been a member of the Bayer HealthCare Executive Committee and is responsible for the worldwide Bayer Consumer Care Division, as well as Bayer HealthCare business activities in Latin America.

Born in 1955 in Ridgewood, N.J., Mr. Balkema received his bachelor's degree in business administration and his A.S. degree in aeronautical science in 1976 from Nathaniel Hawthorne College. He received a master's degree in business administration in 1981 from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

He began his professional career in 1977 at American Cyanamid in Wayne, N.J., where he held positions of increasing responsibility in manufacturing, sales, product management and strategic business management. He was named Vice President and General Manager of the Shulton Division business in 1988, and in 1991 became head of the Lederle Consumer Health Division. Bringing with him 18 years of experience in the consumer products business, Mr. Balkema joined Bayer Corporation in December 1994 as President of the Consumer Care USA Division.

In May 2000, he was appointed General Manager of the Consumer Care Business Group of Bayer AG. His responsibilities included strategic direction and leadership for the business group worldwide. He was also an Executive Vice President and member of the Executive Committee of Bayer Corporation.

Since June 2003, Mr. Balkema has served as Chairman of the World Self-Medication Industry.

Mr. Balkema is married with two children.
